Battered and Bruised

February, the month of...bruises and gashes! Apparently the "love in the air" has affected my children in ways I can't explain. Saturday night we were at Kristi's house eating dinner. Hayden, Hunter, Harley and Bostyn were in the playroom having a great 'ol time. Hayden was climbing on tables, jumping off chairs, and crashing through the house. He was told to calm down so he wouldn't get hurt. Which is exactly what he did-calm down. He sat on the "little kid" table and was watching Hunter play Zelda when out of nowhere he begins to laugh uncontrollably. He was laughing so hard he lost his balance and fell off the table and hit his head on a wooden rocking chair. Yep-just sitting and laughing-split his right eyebrow open. So off to the ER we go...when the Dr. came to see Hayden (after everyone calmed down about his eyelashes) she gave me my choices. I told her the activeness of my child and she made the choice for me. Glue! She glued his eye back together, then glued the glue, then glued the steri-strips onto his head, then put a band aid over that. The nurse was a bit amazed at the amount of glue she put on his wound, but I thank her every time he bumps his head while crashing through the house. Now to make matters worse, Hayden is allergic to the adhesive on Band aids, so the skin has been ripped off his head in 2 spots next to the glue! So I, being the medic that I am, constructed a bandage with gauze and special medical tape...yeah the "special" medical tape also ripped off skin and now Hayden won't let me near his head. What is the moral of Hayden's story?? If you want to get hurt...calm down! P.S. the scabs on his shoulders are rug burns from wrestling with Hunter (please do not turn me in to DCFS!).
Now onto Harley...she is the girly girl of the family, the princess in training, the graceful-yeah I can't use that word anymore! Yesterday she was dancing in the kitchen at Jules house and hit her face on the table, black bloody lip! Then today she was jumping on the trampoline with a phone in her hands (why?? Good question!) And the phone hits her on the other side of her lip cutting and bruising it. Tonight, while cleaning her room, Harley bends over to pick up a toy and smacks her face on the door, opening up both sides of her lip and causing more trauma that humanly possible! Moral of Harley's story? Stand still and don't move!
So, steer clear of us...and hopefully the February "love bug" won't hit you in the face the way it hit us!!

Pine Wood Derby 2008

This year was a great year for the Pine Wood Derby. The ward we belong to allowed the Tiger Cub Scouts to participate in the race this year. That was fabulous news for Hayden and not so fabulous news for Hunter (more competition). The boys took their blocks of wood to Grandpa B's house and started constructing their cars. They got to use the skill saw, sand, and wear the safety goggles!
Hunter wanted to do an Army Hummer and Hayden a race car. Well, Hunter's car turned out so good that Hayden decided (like always) to make his car look EXACTLY like Hunter's. The boys painted their Hummers in Army colors, and they did an amazing job! The day before the race Dad added the much needed weight and graphite on the wheels. Then the day arrived!
With butterflies in our stomaches the boys went with Dad to weigh the cars in and await the race. Both boys did so well, they won all their races. The Scout Leaders took the top 5 cars and gave them ribbons and a stand for their car. Hunter and Hayden made the top 5 so both got prizes! We were extremely happy that Hunter won this year and I was also extremely happy that Hayden won (less tears in the end). It was a eventful evening that Harley and I will never understand, yet strive to support the boys in our lives that LOVE the Pine Wood Derby!

In Loving Memory...

Junior MacPherson Munk "Pop"

Great Grandpa "Pop" passed away late Sunday night. He had been in the hospital for minor surgery and due to complications passed on. We got the news early Monday morning and are so sad at the loss of our Grandpa. We are sad for "Gauze" and know that she will miss him. We are also sad for "Baka" and Dad (Dave) because they will miss him too. "Pop" was always fun to visit because he always had a game on the T.V. and his back yard was so amazing. "Pop" had a work shop that he loved to be in and we will always treasure the things that he made for us. We will miss him but know that he is in a better place and looking down on us now. May he guide us in our paths to be with him one day.

In Loving Memory...

Butch

On Friday night Grandma Duke (the grandma we live with) called and told us that Butch, her dog, was in the hospital because he was really sick. Then Saturday Grandma called to tell us Butch had an infection and was doing really bad. Butch was a young dog so we were all very baffled by this. Hunter worried and prayed and cried a lot of tears for Butch while he was in the hosptial. Then Sunday night at 8pm Grandma called to tell us Butch died. We are all very sad and know that Grandma really misses her companion. We are all very sad also. Hunter's job everyday was to go upstairs and help Grandma with Butch, feed him, get him water, take him outside to go potty (then clean it up), Hunter is really feeling the loss of Butch and he misses him a lot. Hayden grew up with Butch and is the first dog he ever knew. "Butchy" is the one that helped Hayden realize his calling in life...to take care of animals! Butch was a good dog to all the kids and a great friend for Grandma. We will miss him.

Our first EKG

Hayden had to have an EKG done this week. Having never experienced this before I got as much information as I could, then tried to explain it to Hayden. And as good as I am at explainations, I find daily that I still need a lot of work.
I told Hayden he had to take off his shirt so they could stick stickers to him and listen to his heart. We went through all the usual questions: does it hurt, are there needles, will you be there ect. I did a really good job and he seemed to be at ease with the information.
So yesterday at 4pm we got to the Dr's office and into the EKG room. The nice nurse explained to Hayden all the steps they would take and then asked him to take off his shirt and lay on the bed. So Hayden took off his shirt and- low and behold- there is a pajama top on underneath it. He jumped up on the bed and layed down. The nurse looked at me and I looked at Hayden..."buddy you need to take off your shirt." Hayden pointed to the shirt on the foor, "I did, this is a pajama top not a shirt" Really thought-what do you say at this point? I just had to laugh.
After some explaining that he needed to be "naked" on the top he finally agreeed to take it off, but for the record "it is not a shirt-it is a pajama top. Besides you should do a better job at explaining these things to people."
And 30 seconds later were were done and putting his "shirts" back on. Harley and Hunter were very concerned and littered him with questions. Hayden told them quite the tale of not being able to breath for 6 minutes and the pinching and lots of beeping..."ohh it was horrible, but I was so brave."
I love that kid

Les Miserables-A first for all of us!

Last night I took the kids to see the Northridge High School's production of Les Miserabes. I was a bit nervous that the story would be to much for them, but thought it was safe coming from a High School!
When we got to the High School the kids were doing their "mike checks", so we got to see what they looked like before the musical started. Harley immediatley started rating the boys and came to the conclusion that Jean Valjean was the cutest and wondered if he had a little brother....wow I didn't realise that eleventeen was a real number!
The kids were amazing and sat through the entire 2 1/2 hour musical. They were very well behaved and only asked a few questions. It helped that they already knew the music. It was fun to see them put the story together and see their favorite songs in action. I was so proud of them and look forward to taking them to many more musical productions...the next one they want to see is Phantom!
Hunter was facinated that you could sing, act, and be funny doing it! (Thernardier made s all laugh) But his favorite part was the stage/production crew and the cat walks...behind the scenes seems to be his "thing". Harley loved Fantine or Eponine but was sure she could have sung the Cosette part! Hayden kept me laughing with his quirky comments. He noticed the details in all the scenery, the shoes the boys were wearing, the blacked out teeth, and the lights that were still swaying. When the war scene happened and the cast started the battle, Hayden turned to me and in an extremely loud voice asked, "Is this Mexico against France?" The sweet old people sitting next to us burst out laughing, as did I.
All in all, it was an amazing night. Hunter has been humming the music all morning and Hayden keeps asking if the kids pretended to be dead or if they really were dead. Harley is troubled that life really was that bad in Paris and can't wait to start her musical career. It really opened up their eyes what a great event! Thank you NHS! Thank you Dena Brady!
I rate this night at perfect 10!

Sleep My Little Angel Sleep

So, this may turn out to be the blog about Hayden, but he is just so entertaining. It has been 6 1/2 years of life now for Hayden and he still has not mastered the art of sleeping. We are working diligently on trying to get the sleepless wonder to SLEEP! But to be honest, for those of you that know the 'real' Hayden, the trick is to get him to sleep NOT in my bed and NOT with me! I have tried about every trick in the book and even resorted to locking him in a room, threats, bribes, money, yelling-- i think you get the picture.
After much contemplation I offered him a Go Diego! Go! bed. Well the wheels in his head started turning and his eyes lit up, "I will never get out of bed if you let me have a Diego bed, I promise!" I crossed my fingers.
Off to Walmart we go! He picked out the best bed spread and the best pillow case and we rushed it home. Hayden made his bed with tender loving care and placed all his animals in their designated spot. He couldn't wait to get in bed and sleep! I almost cried I was so happy. Then bed time came, he climbed in bed ever so careful, snuggled up to his pillow and said, "K Mom get in!" Uhhh yeah. I explained how Diego was so special I did not want to mess him up by getting in bed. I tried every excuse I could think of...Hayden is one smart cookie and a great debater to boot! Finally I left the room with promises to come back and check on him, even hold his hand if he needed it.
1 hour went by and not one word from Hayden. I was dancing for joy when Hayden came walking in the living room. "Yeah Diego is not as cool as you Mom, I would prefer to just sleep in your bed and let my animals sleep with Diego." So back to the bedroom we go with words of encouragement when I had a brilliant idea. "Hunter why don't you lay by Hayden in his cool new bed until he falls asleep?" Hunter looked at me like I was crazy, but seeing the desperation in my eyes he got in bed with Hayden and promptly fell asleep.
1 hour went by and again in comes Hayden. "This sucks why can't I just sleep in your bed with you? Hunter is happy in my Diego bed and I can just see Diego in the morning." At this point I am almost ready to cave and put him in my bed...but NO! I will fight this and he will sleep in his bed...without me!
I would love to tell you that I had a successful night. I would love to end this with words of joy. But this is Hayden we are talking about. 3 hours later (1:30 am) he finally dropped to sleep on the couch, on my legs, and I thought of how much I hated Diego and his stupid bed spread.
Alas, I picked up the my sweet baby boy and put him in his bed, tucked him in tight, and tip toed out of the room only to turn around and see that sweet boy standing right behind me with his Diego bed spread and a smile on his face, "Mom it just works better this way...move over please" AHHHH

Christmas Day 2007

Santa made it to the house after making 3 attempted stops only to find the "naughty little Munk children" awake in their Mom's bed! Christmas Eve was a very exciting night that was hard to calm down from. But eventually morning came and at 7:30am the kids were ready to go up to Grandma Duke's house and see what Santa left us!
Harley got roller skates (pink), littlest pet shop Dream House, and a big box of make-up! I guess she has officially arrived in the world of "old enough" and she couldn't wait to apply the said make-up at her Maka's house with her girl cousin Ellie ("old" girl cousins are in short supply for this 11 year old).
Hunter got roller blades, a box of Knex, and an Army truck with army men, guns, and all sorts of killing splendor. He was beside himself with joy about this gift. "How did Santa know I like the Army?" What a sweet kid Hunter is! His big smile made Christmas pains all worth it! Although he was a little frustrated with the Knex and is hoping for some "alone" time in the near future to work on some amazing contraptions. (Alone meaning NOT with Hayden)
Hayden got a Go Diego Go! doll, I mean guy, (that talks), baby lion (that also talks) and a rescue cage to help save all the animals in danger! Look out Charlie! He also got what he has been asking for for the past 3 years...a snowboard. The long awaited board still sits in the living room amongst all the snow outside because "what if it gets dirty or snow on it? No, it is too special I think I will just save it for later." uhhh.....that's Hayden for ya!

Dinner!

After much assurance from the people I work with I attempted a new dinner tactic with Hayden last night. I requested "Chef Hayden" make an appearance in the kitchen and whip us up some dinner. He entered the "cooking area" the appropriate attire (boxer briefs on head for hat, big shirt for apron, and 2 oven mits for "safety reasons")
The cooking went well, we made baked spaghetti. He did an amazing job grating the cheese, cooking the noodles, making the sauce, combining all the ingredients and putting it in the oven to bake. He stayed for the entire 1 hour process, as long as I called him "Chef Hayden".
When the dinner was done baking we pulled it out, set it on the table, took the tin foil off and....boy oh boy...."hey this is not regular spaghetti, this is not what I was expecting. This is disgusting pig food if you ask me. I am not eating this, you are the meanest mom on the planet for making me eat this." (tears, tears, more screaming, plate on floor, chair knocked over, stomping to bedroom) At which time Harley looked at me and said, "Isn't he the one that made it?"
After Chef Hayden calmed down a little I put some spaghetti on his plate and went to talk to him. I said, "Just go look at it on your plate, if you still think it is gross you don't have to eat it." So Hayden stomped back into the kitchen took one look at his plate and said, "See this is what I am talking about, that is what regular spaghetti looks like. I am not eating that other crap." Harley then looked at me and rolled her eyes "whatever" she said. I put my head in my hands and watched Hayden wolf down his plate of 'regular spaghetti'.
Another successful dinner at the Munk house! Merry Christmas!
